Grandma Ruth’s Goofy Cake (Original Version)

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 cup oil
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 cups water

Sift dry ingredients. Add wet and mix with a spoon until all dry ingredients are moistened (do not over mix). Pour in an ungreased cake pan (9×12).

Bake at 350º F until cake pulls away from sides of pan, 35 – 40 minutes, or use the toothpick test.

What makes it goofy? Where are the eggs and milk? This is the original goofy cake recipe, sort of the traditional Midwestern weak coffee version.
